The story “20 Steps to Ventriloquism” reads as an instruction manual. The story structures themselves lend to this piercing view of humanity as Padgett often dispenses with the traditional first/third person linear narrative. From the first story, Padgett displays a wonderful imagination for human pathology and self-destructive compulsions. The examination of our nature is not the virtuous and noble fabling ( coming of age, self-sacrifice, etc) of what we want ourselves to be, but a penetrating look at man as that morally obliquitous, phenomenally ungrateful biped of Dostoevsky and Nietzsche. The Secret of Ventriloquism amplifies the surreal and weird to provide not a picture of man, but an x-ray. Jon Padgett’s The Secret of Ventriloquism (Dunhams Manor Press) hits the same nerve as the HBO mini-series Westworld as in its introspective core it asks the basic existential question: what, precisely, is it to be human? ![]() ![]() ![]() Author’s notes offer background on Pavlova, who died in 1931, and a brief paragraph on Degas, who died in 1917. ![]() Pavlova’s words are matched to a number of Degas’s paintings of dancers, musicians, and figure studies. “As soon as the orchestra began to play, I became very grave and attentive, eagerly listening, moved for the first time in my life by the call of Beauty.” She vowed to dance upon the stage at that very theater, and indeed she did. She was utterly dazzled by seeing Sleeping Beauty danced to the music of Tchaikovsky. ![]() Using the words of the famous ballerina Anna Pavlova, the text tells the story, in the first person, of her first visit to the theater to see the ballet, a birthday gift from her mother. It turned out, this was a pretty good read. I’ve never read Penelope Ward’s works before so I didn’t have any idea how the book was going to be. ![]() It sounds illicit and dirty and oh so tempting. ![]() I have to admit, the first thing that got my attention to this book was the title. ![]() ![]() I saw what I was going through as a kid-friendship fights, crushes, growing up-and the BSC members went through the same things. The fictional characters in Stoneybrook were a very real part of my life. ![]() Like many BSC super fans, I have a strong emotional connection to these hand painted covers. I was definitely never as cool as Claudia in sixth grade-the fluffy perm I had was proof of that-but she made me feel seen. Seeing Claudia and the gang again after all these years brought back fond memories. I went on a deep dive through Soileau’s Instagram to look at the original oil paintings. Artist Hodges Soileau created most of the covers, spin-off series, and products like calendars. I had no idea that the BSC covers were originally oil paintings. ![]() Recently, I reconnected to my nostalgia for the covers when book editor Rebecca Kuss tweeted that she bought a painting of Stacey’s Mistake.
